TWENTY-FIVE

“How many?” Frank asked the man that brought the news.

“Forty maybe, hard to tell. No more than that, though. Twelve hour ride from here. They’ll stop for the night, be here in the morning.”

“Frank,” Hal drew his attention. “Now more than ever we need to leave.”

The man looked at Hal. “Leave? You’re the Cavalry.”

“He needs to leave,” Hal replied. “They’re coming for him. If he’s not here, they’ll keep going?”

The man scoffed. “Obviously you’re from Metropolis.”

“What?” Hal asked confused.

“It don’t work that way. Tell him Duke.”

“They’re coming for the people, Hal,” Frank told him. “Watching them die is my punishment, not the other way around. Hey, Spat,” he nodded upward at the man. “Don’t say anything yet. I know everyone is having a good time right now. Go to the Frank-Frank on the Range, have a drink. We’ll figure this out. Say nothing until we do. Tell the doc we’ll be back.”

“Got it Duke.” Spat walked from them on the street and toward the saloon.

“I hate that he calls you Duke,” Hal complained.

“Let’s get out of the street,” Frank said. “We’ll go to my office. This way.”

“You have an office?” asked Hal.

“Hal, I’m the fucking sheriff.” Frank led them across the street and to the Sheriff’s office. Inside was a table, a desk and lone cell.

“Aw,” Hal whined. “I am so jealous. This is really cool, Frank.”

“It is.” Frank pulled out chairs. “But it’s not Beginnings. Have a seat.” After walking to his desk, he brought over a bottle and glasses. “Don’t drink too much, Dean, this shit will for sure have you running around naked.”

Dean laughed. “Please, I have become a professional hanging out with you, Frank.” He tapped the glass. “I’m ready.”

“Alright.” Frank started filling glasses, then sat down.

Elliott pulled his glass forward. “Do you mind me asking why the whole town is in the Frank-Frank on the Range?”

“Oh, it’s Journey Day. Like Christmas, only Journey.”

“As in traveling?” asked Elliott.

Dean replied. “As if the band.” He took a sip. “Frank loves … whoa! Holy shit!” he started gasping and coughing.

“See, Dean, I told you. It’ll send you into puberty.”

Hal chuckled. “Not quite the professional, huh?” Smug, Hal took a drink. “Sometimes you just … Wow! Good … “he couldn’t even finish his stock phrase, he started choking. “Elliott don’t touch that.”

“Oh, now I have to. It’s like a hot sauce challenge.” Elliott lifted the glass and took a drink.

Everyone watched.

“It’s not bad.” Elliott put down the glass.

“Ha! Ryder fucking wins.” Frank refreshed his glass. “Okay, so, situation.” He set down the bottle.

“You can’t leave,” said Elliott. “That is obvious.”

“What?” Hal blasted. “Elliott, he cannot change history. Staying would do that.”

“Captain, if this town gets slaughtered, he changes history. This town right here is Bowman. Formally, Miles City. Nowhere in the history of Miles City and we know this, has this town been slaughtered. And if he leaves, they’ll think he’s hiding and kill everyone anyhow.”

“That we know of,” Dean said. “Look, you haven’t gone back to Bowman to check the history books there, have you.
